Pin Part Heat Treatment Process and Hardness Comparisons
Heat treatment is a critical step to improve part durability and performance in engineering and manufacturing sectors. In this article, we present in detail the heat treatment report and material hardness analyses we performed for the pin part. We also provide information about the test sample prepared according to the report results.

Heat Treatment Hardness and Depth Evaluation
Accurate analysis of heat treatment results is crucial to optimise the performance of the part. In this context, we compared heat treatment analyses for two different material types:
- Material 1: 17NiCrMo6
- Material 2: 8620
The heat treatment results and hardness profiles after grinding for both materials are summarised as follows:
Hardness Comparison Table (After 0.5 mm Grinding)
Depth (mm) | 17NiCrMo6 (HV) | 8620 (HV) | Comparison |
---|---|---|---|
0,5 | 776 | 638 | 17NiCrMo6 higher surface hardness. |
1,0 | 776 | 586 | 17NiCrMo6 is superior. |
1,5 | 746 | 476 | 17NiCrMo6 is superior. |
2,0 | 644 | – | 17NiCrMo6 depth advantage. |
2,5 | 557 | – | 17NiCrMo6 depth advantage. |
3,0 | 503 | – | 17NiCrMo6 depth advantage. |
Analysis Results:
- 17NiCrMo6: It offers a wider depth of hardness, providing strength up to 3.0 mm. Surface hardness is also very high (~63 HRC).
- 8620(20NiCrMo2): The surface hardness is medium (58-59 HRC), but the depth of hardness only reaches up to 1.2 mm.
Sample Trial and Customer Testing
Based on the results of the report, a trial sample for the pin part has been prepared. This sample will be sent to you with the current shipment. If you wish, you can perform the necessary tests and evaluate the material performance according to your own conditions.
The trial specimen was produced by an optimised heat treatment process using 17NiCrMo6 material. Thus, both surface strength and depth performance were improved.
Conclusions from the Pin Part Heat Treatment Report
- Surface Hardness Performance: Offering high hardness after grinding, 17NiCrMo6 is ideal for applications requiring surface wear resistance.
- Depth Performance: Provides long-term durability with a greater depth of hardness.
- Recommended Use: In applications requiring hardness and durability, 17NiCrMo6 material should be preferred.
Things to Consider in the Heat Treatment Process
- Hardness Depth: Material selection should be made according to the application requirements.
- Surface Hardness: Sufficient hardness should be provided for surface strength and wear resistance.
- Material and Process Selection: Material performance can be improved by optimising heat treatment parameters (time and temperature).
Conclusion and Communication
This heat treatment report for the pin part provides important information for material selection and performance evaluation. The trial sample, which will be sent with the shipment, can be tested in your application areas and the process results can be evaluated.
